Teaching from Romans 6:5-10 - "
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.”
If we partake of Christ’s death, and all of the benefits, then we partake of his resurrection life too. Our sins is punished, and we’ve been raised to walk in newness of life. We are to reckon these things true, which means, “Believe them.”
“We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.”
The only way we can be free from sin is by a death and a resurrection. God doesn’t sweep sin under the rug. He punishes it to the death, and then we are free. He also gives new life, which is a resurrection. Consider your sin debt gone, and new life to be in you. Consider the raging sinful body that you wrestle with to already be fully punished, and dead. Consider the new life that you have is because of Christ alone. It is not how we feel, or subject to good days and bad days. It is a fact in God’s sight and in our souls.
“For one who has died has been set free from sin.”
He has no more punishment. He died already. Like a criminal that has been executed, he’s paid for his crimes. We paid, and sin can’t say, “You are mine.” Sin died, and has no more hold on you. He has no more authority. The Judge declares you free, because the crime has been fully paid.
“Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.”
It’s all about BELIEVING. This isn’t will power, or mind over matter. Later God teaches us about the Spirit. He is our help. In Romans 6:14, he says that we are “under grace,” meaning that he will help us, which is why sin is no longer a master. Grace send the Son to pay for our sins, and grace has given us new life.
“We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God."
Christ lives unto God. He wasn’t resurrected to be disobedient. You have the same new nature, after the image of God. You have been born again from above. You are a new creation who delights to do God’s will. You have holiness in you now, because your sins were paid.
This isn’t a feeling, but it’s a fact. Sometimes, we feel holy, and sometimes, we do not. We are to believe it is true, however. Believing will bring fruit.
