Text : Genesis 2:18-25
Theme : The Ultimate Helper
God gave Adam everything he needed for his enjoyment. He provided nature in all its beauty—food, water, air, and a perfect environment. He also blessed Adam with intellect, enabling him to name every animal and bird. With his soul—mind, will, and emotions—Adam could reason, discern, and act productively.
Last week, we saw that in the midst of these great gifts, God also gave Adam a command to obey.
Obedience is the proof of our love for God; it is how we express our devotion and true worship to Him. Jesus said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is more valuable than extravagant offerings (1 Samuel 15:22). Even great acts of generosity are meaningless without love and obedience to God (1 Corinthians 13:3). To truly love God is to obey His commandments and submit to His will.
From our text—Genesis 2:18-23—we see that Adam received a command from God, but he was alone. He had no parents, siblings, or friends—no human relationship whatsoever.
Imagine that scenario for a moment: Adam, surrounded by fish, goats, trees, lions, and dogs. He lived in a perfect environment, free from pollution, eating clean food, and enjoying nature. But despite all these blessings, he had no one to talk to at his level of reasoning.
Some animals make great pets, but imagine trying to play basketball with a goat, sing hymns with a bird, or dance with a fish. Adam had no companion to relate with, and so God said, "It is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). In His wisdom, God made Eve and brought her to Adam. A wife is a gift from God, and Adam was delighted to have her.
Our families, friends, and associates are gifts from God. A God-given wife is a blessing: "She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life” (Proverbs 31:12). "He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord” (Proverbs 18:22). Her primary mission on earth is to please her husband (in the Lord), to support and build her home—everything else is secondary (1 Corinthians 7:34).
As Christians, we are never truly alone. Beyond all natural gifts—including human relationships—God has given us the greatest Helper of all: the Holy Spirit (John 14:26). He is greater than family, friends, associates, and even a spouse. He is better to us than 10 sons 1 Samuel 1:8, He is a friend who sticks closer than a brother Proverbs 18:24. He dwells within us, teaching, guiding, comforting, counseling, and helping us. He remains with us forever.
Because of the fall, human relationships have become fragile—they can be sweet today and sour tomorrow. However, a believer is constantly refreshed from within by the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, we must thank God for the natural gifts He has given us—family, friends, spouses, and associates—but above all, we must treasure the Holy Spirit. We must strive not to grieve Him.
Next week, we will study the fall, Adam’s disobedience, and its consequences. We will also learn how disobedience grieves the Holy Spirit and leads to weariness in the soul of a believer.
