Genesis 4:12-24

Theme: Consequences of Sin and God's Grace

In the last part of Genesis 3, we saw Adam hiding from God. God asked, I rephrase, have you disobeyed me? And Adam blamed Eve, saying, “The woman you gave me.”

Sometimes, sin is so hidden in us that we don't see it. We can easily spot the faults in others but fail to recognize our own. True repentance, forgiveness, and healing come when we God open our eyes to see our own sin. The Holy Spirit does this for a believer through prayer.

“And the LORD God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife”, this tells us that an animal was killed, blood was shed (death). Hebrews 9:22; however, it is impossible for blood of bulls and goats to take away sin. Hebrews 10:4. Only the blood of Christ will avail and atonement has been made for every Christian.

God says vengeance is His, we can become so bitter that we try to take matters into our own hands, imagining ways to bring judgment on others. While sin has consequences, we are not called to enforce those consequences through our thoughts, words, or actions. All the so called night vigil and “prayer” against Satan and “enemies of destiny” are useless.

Our vulnerabilities and the pain we feel often comes from our own sins, not the sins of others though they are instrumental. Adam blamed God by pointing to Eve, Eve blamed Satan, and Satan was cursed. Temptation will come, but Jesus warns us, “Woe to him through whom it comes” (Luke 17:1).

As we reflect on our own sins— selfish motives, greed, lust, and pride—and the pain they bring (James 1:13-15), we should pray for others as well, asking God to show them mercy just as He’s shown us. We must own our mistakes and seek forgiveness—not just for ourselves, but for everyone involved; God knows those that are His and He will answer as He pleases. 1 John 5:17

Though sin calls for justice, ultimate victory over sin is certain. Satan remains an enemy of the church, a type of Eve, but Jesus will crush him. Eventually, believers will completely reign over sin through Christ.

For Eve, childbirth would bring pain, and she would struggle under her husband’s authority. For Adam, work would become difficult, as the ground was cursed. Death would follow, as without death, sin would spread uncontrollably. These truths remain unchanged, no matter what false teachers claim.

Adam and Eve were also banished from the Garden of Eden, separated from their place of comfort. This separation can show up in many ways: a literal prison or a prison of bitterness, unforgiveness, jealousy, or despair, leading to illness, job loss, or broken relationships.

But remember, Christ is the tree of life. Through Him, believers have eternal life; even if we die, we will live again, free from sin. In Christ, the Holy Spirit helps us overcome sin (Galatians 5:24-26). We cannot live in sin and reign with Christ at the same time. We cannot serve ourselves and serve Christ at the same time. The Holy Spirit cannot reign in power in a sinful - unrepentant heart.

“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.” Mark 2:23

We must fight to put away sin - flesh, as it blocks us from experiencing the fruits of the Spirit in the tree of life- Christ.

Next week, we will look at how Adam's disobedience affected his children—Cain and Abel.

The kids are learning well and we believe that Christ will make a home in their hearts.

Jesus said “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:35-38

Pray for us that God will send in more hands, as we look to Him for strength, for grace to do His will alone and to go wherever He leads. We cannot decide where or how far we can go, we are called to follow Him.
