Text : Genesis Chapter 5
Theme : Inherent Sin and the Grace of God.
Genesis chapter 5 outlines the genealogy of Adam, starting with his son Seth, and continuing through Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch (who walked faithfully with God and was taken by God without experiencing death), Methuselah, Lamech, and finally Noah, who had three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Each of them lived to a certain age and died, as they inherited the consequences of sin and death from Adam, their natural ancestor. This same inheritance continues with us today. We, too, are born into sin, having inherited a sinful nature from Adam, down to our parents. Death is our natural inheritance, and no one knows the exact time of their death—children even die before birth.
Despite this, God's grace has always been available, as seen in Enoch’s life, and it remains available to us today. Though we inherit a sinful nature from our parents, we can find hope in the mercy of God. Through the grace of God in Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit offers us new life. By faith, we are saved—not from physical death(though false teachers promise that), but from eternal separation from God due to sin.
Notice that while sin is inherited from Adam - natural parents, faith cannot be passed down. Faith is a gift from God. From among all who are inherently sinful, God, in His mercy, calls some to Himself, paying their sin debt, offering forgiveness, and giving them the gift of eternal life.
This is God's choice. If you've received His grace, you know how amazing it is. But how do you know if God has called you? He sends you the gospel and grants you the faith to believe—to trust in Christ.
Like Enoch, how can others know that God has called you? It’s by the fruit you bear. the scripture says, “By their fruit, you will know them.” However, don’t lose hope in yourself. You can start today by calling on God. Consider the example of Jabez. He called on God, and God changed him. He didn’t need to convince others of his transformation—they could see the change in his life through the fruit he bore. Though he was born in shame, He became an honorable man.
Cry out to God. Labor in prayer until you see a change in your heart and the fruit of holiness in your life. Don’t try to imitate holiness—that’s futile-You will slip up every now and then, exposing yourself. We must learn to tell God the truth (he knows all our idols, he sees them), tell Him everything and trust Him for true transformation. Eventually, you will come to hate the sin you once loved, and like Jabez, you will overcome the shame that once defined you. (1 Chronicles 4:9)
Finally, while we may inherit certain character traits—whether good or bad—from our parents or from the culture we grow up in, saving faith and its transformative power cannot be inherited. It is a gift from God John 1:12. My prayer is that God will quicken your spirit and give you new life. Don’t stop praying, don’t stop calling on God. A new life is possible; holiness is possible through His grace. Look to Christ—He is calling you through the gospel.
Please pray for us as we travel to Bauchi for a 5-day free medical mission and for the children as they embark on a short break
