Text : Genesis 9: 1-17
Theme : The Sign of the Covenant – The Cross.
God blessed Noah and provided for him, ensuring his safety and sustenance. Just as God sustained Noah, He also provides for us today most often through the work of our hands, which He blesses.
But God doesn’t only provide; He also instructs. As in Eden, He gave Noah commandments guidelines for living, including the lives of others - the command not to kill. The scripture tells us that His commandments are not burdensome; they are for our good. When we obey them, we experience peace, joy and fruitfulness in our journey here on earth. Sin, on the other hand, only leaves us empty, robbing us of God’s peace, joy and the assurance of salvation.
Though the destruction of the wicked during the flood might tempt us to judge, reject or even hate (kill with our words) those who reject the gospel, God calls us to love - Love is patient, Love is kind, love suffers long; Judgment belongs to God alone and in His time.
The rainbow was God’s sign of mercy a covenant never to destroy the earth by flood again. But in Christ, we have an even greater sign: the blood of Jesus. Christ’s death on the cross guarantees a new and everlasting covenant, one that stands as a continual memorial before God just like the rainbow did for Noah. Through the finished work of Christ, every believer is saved from the eternal consequences of sin. Mercy is continually extended instead of judgment; with the blood of Jesus speaking better things - forgiveness and reconciliation. Hebrews 12:24
But make no mistake this mercy does not leave us in sin. It transforms us. John 1:12
The Holy Spirit, given to us, is the evidence that we belong to Christ. He is our seal and the mark of our authenticity as God’s children. He doesn’t remain idle in us; He works actively, producing holiness and shaping us into Christ’s likeness. Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot obey God, we cannot overcome sin or live for the glory of God. He doesn’t leave us merely informed, He transforms us, so we can live a life that is pleasing to God.
In Conclusion, as we reflect on God’s covenant and the sign of His faithfulness through the cross, we are reminded of His mercy and love towards others. We must not isolate ourselves or look down on those outside the faith. Instead, let us learn to love them sincerely, preach Christ to them with compassion, and trust in God’s grace daily to live a holy life that reflects His character.
We continue to learn and teach the gospel, trusting that the Lord will give us grace to bear fruit through obedience.
