Week 97 - Free Weekend Program for Children
Date: 28 June, 2025
Text: Genesis 13:10–18
Theme: Walking by Faith, Not by Sight
Genesis 13 draws our attention to the relationship between Abraham and Lot - Christians, but with different purpose in Christ as God has pre-ordained.
In verses 1–9, a conflict arose between their herdsmen due to the increase in their possessions—the land could no longer support them both. Abraham, valuing peace over personal gain, took the humble initiative and allowed Lot to choose whichever land he preferred
Though Abraham, as the elder and the one with God’s promise, would have decided to choose first, he did not. Lot, driven by what he saw with his physical eyes, chose the fertile Jordan plain—a land that looked prosperous but was near Sodom, a place of great wickedness (v.12).
Unlike Abraham, there’s no record of Lot seeking God’s direction in his choice. He made a decision purely based on appearance and logic “Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) While Lot was a righteous man (2 Peter 2:7), his choice led him dangerously close to corruption.
This is a warning to us. It’s not wrong to accept privileges, as Abraham offered Lot, but we must always seek God in prayer. Too often, we make decisions based on appearance, logic, or what seems safe and successful. These faculties—our instincts and intellect—are God-given, but they must be surrendered to Him. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust in the Lord and not lean on our own understanding. Natural knowledge and understanding of things are good but we cannot lean on our own ability.
Even with pure intentions and advanced knowledge, without Christ, we can walk into traps that bring destruction. We see this again in 1 Samuel 16, when Samuel almost anointed the wrong king based on appearance - He looked at Eliab, strong and tall, and assumed he was God’s choice. But God said, “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Lot’s choice led him and his family into painful consequences. As Scripture says, “evil company corrupts good morals” (1 Corinthians 15:33).
After Lot left, God reaffirmed His promise to Abraham. In verses 14–17, God told him to lift up his eyes in every direction—the land and future descendants would be his forever. This was more than a land promise; it was a spiritual inheritance.
When we trust Christ by faith, He gives far more than we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). We may not possess wealth or comfort, but in Christ, we have everything. As God told Abraham, “as far as your eyes can see…”—so Christ has become our eternal portion and inheritance, we have the unfathomable riches of Christ (Ephesians 3:18–19).
Abraham’s life wasn’t marked by striving but by faith and worship. He built altars as he went along, reflecting a life of fellowship, dependence, and obedience. And in return, God gave him a legacy far beyond earthly possession (Romans 8:17).
May we learn from this gospel truth, Like Abraham, let us not be driven by appearances or ambition, but by the Spirit. Let us walk by faith, not by sight. The rewards of faith may not always be visible or material, but they are eternal.
To have Christ is to have everything. His promises endure. His glory outshines every green field, fortune, or fame this world offers.
May God’s grace help us acknowledge Him in all our ways, trust Him wholly, and submit to Him fully—believing that what He gives, both now and in eternity, will far exceed anything we could choose for ourselves.
